The aim of this work from the CS-NOW project was to build an understanding of the co-benefits and tradeoffs between climate mitigation and adaptation in the United Kingdom (UK) to inform the Government’s efforts to promote decarbonisation and resilience. Knowledge of co-benefits and trade-offs will aid the Government’s identification of no/low regret actions.
This paper advances the conceptual understanding of maladaptation and proposes a systematic, practical framework for identifying and preventing maladaptation risks in climate change adaptation at early planning stages.
This research examines the progress made by the public sector in Scotland from risk assessment to adaptation planning and implementation as noted in “Is Scotland climate ready? – 2022 Report to Scottish Parliament”.
This CS-NOW project built
an understanding of the co-benefits and tradeoffs between climate mitigation and adaptation in the United Kingdom (UK) to inform the Government’s efforts to promote decarbonisation and resilience. Knowledge of co-benefits and trade-offs will aid the Government’s identification of no/low regret actions (i.e. actions with little or no trade-offs for either adaptation or mitigation outcomes).
The Climate Change Committee's 2023 assessment of Scotland's adaptation progress finds good governance and ambition undermined by a significant implementation gap, with actions not happening at the required scale or pace.
This 2023 CCC report assesses Northern Ireland's climate adaptation progress, highlighting major data gaps, underdeveloped planning, and providing key recommendations for the next adaptation programme.
The paper argues that achieving transformative adaptation requires centering justice by addressing power imbalances, valuing diverse knowledges, fostering grassroots agency, and embracing uncertainty and learning.
