Introduction

How prepared are you to guide your community through a changing climate? The West Midlands Climate Adaptation Literacy Training equips local councillors and authority officers with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate current and future climate risks within the region. This fully accredited CPD course offers flexible e-learning modules tailored to the West Midlands’ specific climate challenges. By completing the training, participants will not only build confidence in understanding the science and impacts of climate change, but also gain practical tools to lead resilience-building efforts in their work.

Institutional background and trainer

The West Midlands Climate Adaptation Literacy Training has been created by the West Midlands Combined Authority in collaboration with the University of Birmingham. The training has been certified by the CPD Certification Service.

Who would find this useful?

This training would be useful for local councillors and Local Authority Officers to understand the climate risks facing the region and the action that can be taken to be more resilient in a change climate.

What’s included in the course?

The course is split into three e-learning modules that you can complete at your own pace. The content covered includes:

Module 1 – Climate change in the UK and why adaptation matters

  • Headline introduction and key definitions
  • Climate change and future projections
  • Climate hazards and their potential impacts

Module 2 – Zooming in: Climate impacts in the West Midlands

  • Climate risks facing the West Midlands
  • Examples of climate hazards in the West Midlands

Module 3 – How can we adapt to climate change?

  • The measures to adapt to climate change
  • Best practice examples of climate adaptation
  • Adapting your work to be climate resilient

Assessment

Once you have completed the three modules, you can take the assessment. You must achieve 26 points out of 43 in order to pass. You can retake the assessment at any time.

How long will the course take?

You can complete each module at your own pace, in your own time. The time to complete each module will be between 30-45 minutes. Some learners may be quicker, and others may take longer.

Please note that your progress will not be saved. It is recommended that you complete one module in one sitting, as closing the browser or refreshing your page will lose your progress.

Learning outcomes

Once you have completed the three e-learning modules and passed the assessment, you will be issued with a Climate Adaptation Literate digital badge, that you can display in your email signature or via LinkedIn.

You will also receive a certificate from the CPD Certification Service and can use the hours towards your CPD portfolio or system.
