About

Tower Hamlets Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, located in East London on the north bank of the River Thames. The borough forms a key part of London’s historic East End and sits immediately east of the City of London, with a population of more than 300,000 residents.

The council is responsible for delivering essential public services that support residents, communities and local businesses across the borough. These services include housing, education, social care, waste and recycling, planning and development, libraries, leisure facilities and environmental health.

Tower Hamlets is one of the most diverse and dynamic areas of the UK, known for its rich history, cultural heritage and fast-growing economy. The borough includes neighbourhoods such as Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, Stepney, Poplar and Canary Wharf, and is home to major financial, technological and creative industries.

Guided by elected councillors and a directly elected mayor, Tower Hamlets Council works with residents and partners to improve quality of life, strengthen communities and support sustainable growth across the borough.
