Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) is the networking and forum body for organisations interested in the natural and built environment of Northern Ireland.
The Climate Northern Ireland team sits under the NIEL umbrella, carrying out the work of the Climate Northern Ireland contract funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs, as well as other related climate projects.
By acting as a primary point of contact within Northern Ireland for all aspects of climate change, Climate Northern Ireland promotes a more coordinated and coherent approach that adds value to the work of our members.
Climate Northern Ireland Programme
VISION: A dynamic region resilient to the impacts of climate change and driven by a vibrant low–carbon economy that values the people and the environment of Northern Ireland, benefitting current and future generations.
MISSION: “Climate Northern Ireland is a cross-sectoral partnership devoted to understanding and enabling adaptation and mitigation actions in Northern Ireland that can address the climate emergency.”
Aims and Objectives
Support development and implementation of climate policy by enabling the exchange of expertise and advice between Government Departments, public bodies, and civil society.
Engage the research community to help define and address evidence needs for climate policy and action.
Increase co-ordination and awareness on climate change through partnership and clear communication.
Enable delivery of climate action in NI by addressing barriers and building capacity at local, regional and national levels.
Other Major Projects currently delivered by the Climate Northern Ireland Team in NIEL:
Funded by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency, TALX 2 will build on the outputs of the TALX project, establishing and progressing place-based adaptation partnerships on the island of Ireland. TALX 2 will establish living labs across Ireland and Northern Ireland and work closely with local authorities, businesses and communities to identify practical actions that will support holistic and just climate adaptation action.
- Maximising UK Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) Hub:
The UK Adaptation Hub, funded by UKRI and Defra, brings together world-leading research expertise on climate risk and adaptation with existing adaptation delivery networks in UK nations and regions to provide tailored analysis and support, working with societal partners, seeking to achieve transformative changes in climate-influenced vulnerability and resilience across priority sectors. The Hub will be user-led, implementing a mature knowledge co-production approach to address problems identified by partners in sectors and regions through research and capacity building, with the aim of encouraging, enabling and influencing practical steps to transformational adaptation.
- The Coastal Monitoring and Adaptation Plan Project (CMAP):
Funded by PEACEPLUS and led by Ulster University, CMAP will address the challenges of managing a dynamic more resilient marine environment, in the face of growing pressures attributable to climate change. The project will incorporate a citizen science approach and focus on redressing biodiversity loss and restorative based coastal adaptation.
